This original pastel painting was inspired by a memory—one that’s stuck with me for years. The horse in Moment in the Spotlight isn’t my dad’s old gelding Yen, but something about the way he carries himself—the proud arch of the neck, the awareness of being watched, the quiet strength—brought Yen right back to mind.
Yen was a proud Morgan gelding, used most often on the ranch and in the mountains, and he was always the leader of the pack. Every once in a while, he’d step into the arena, and even then, he had that look—like he knew eyes were on him and he was ready to take his place in the spotlight. That same attitude shows up here, in this Palomino Quarter Horse captured under the arena lights.
Moment in the Spotlight Original Pastel Painting celebrates that spirit—when a horse knows he’s something special, and for just a breath of time, the world stands still to watch.
